Project Kameleon - What it is and what it does
The in-line Kameleon filter is an active equalizer with easy to insert modules that are tailored for specific headphones. The device goes between any source (as long as it is around line level) and your headphone amp. It corrects the frequency response of certain headphones so the tonal balance becomes more even.
When you absolutely adore the tonal balance of your headphones as they are and like them for their coloration than this is not for you.
When you like your headphones but would love them to not have that peak in the treble or to have a better extension or more ‘correct’ tonal balance and you don’t want to have your headphones modified and don’t want (or can't) use digital EQ then this might be your answer.
In-short, the homework has been done on each headphone type we have a module for and once you take a listen to a properly corrected headphone, you will have a hard time ever listening to that headphone as is again!
Kameleon was a concept of Frans (G1217's other mad scientist) that has been around for some time. We think it has such potential that it was decided to make it an official G1217 offering and design it in the traditional / exceptionally high quality G1217 way!
What Frans has to say about Kameleon:
Kameleon is Dutch for Chameleon. A Chameleon can adapt its color to its surroundings. The Kameleon in-line filter can adapt it's tonal color to the connected headphone. It cannot do this automatically though, a filter module for a specific headphone must be inserted. Also the Kameleon can't correct distortion, ringing, cone break-up etc. It can't perform miracles and only improve the quality that is already there. The filter circuit is quite basic and thus can not correct lots of peaks/dips, large peaks/dips nor very narrow peaks/dips or make complicated filter schemes. It is only suited to correct the frequency response for those headphones that already are good performers by themselves AND can be improved even further with just those (small) corrections.
Kameleon is perfect for:
- Those that like their headphone(s) as they are but would like them to sound more realistic
- Those who do not want to physically modify their headphones to change their sound
- Those who do not want to or cannot use digital EQ
- Those who value bit perfect playback
- Those who like neutral headphones but don't want to spend loads of cash
A couple examples of what Kameleon does and can do:
You will see a general theme with the graphs below - The modules aim for a more realistic presentation by filling or removing areas that the headphone in stock form, is simply is not capable of. These small nudges in the frequency responce take things to a different level with your favorite headphones. Some headphones, the difference is very subtle and only apparent on certain tracks, while others are much more noticable. In short, Kameleon takes great headphones and simply makes them better. As I stated previously, once you spend time with Kameleon on a certain headphone, it becomes very hard to go back!.
The Sennheiser HD800 is a great headphone but it lacks the rumbing type of subbass and is quite treble happy. The treble can even be quite nasty on a lot of recordings. The filter below gives the HD800 'body' and a nice bass extension. The shrillness is removed and the hyper details are now 'nice' details. Width and expansion of the stereo image (what this headphone is known for) is not affected that much. It has become a quite enjoy-able headphone.
The filter adds removes the midbass centric sound, adds subbass and clarity and above all treble extension and 'air'. Those that feel/think that all T50RP modifications all have rolled off top extension will be amazed what this headphone can do with the right 'motivation'. This filter should be used In conjunction with Shure SRH-940 pads (stock pads are AWFUL)
The filter module below is intended for the Philips A5 Pro with PCU110 velours pads. If you find the bass a bit lacking and the clarity a bit 'off' this filter may bring it closer to 'neutral'.
